This poem was written as a Christmas present for the NICU and the hospital staff in 1999 by my sister. It was later published in the hospital newsletter.
Thanks For The Chance (The Justice Poem)
I came into this world so weak and so small
The doctor’s first said. “She might not make it at all”
We’ll fly her away to the best of the best,
_______ Hospital they said “will take care of the rest”
My mom was so worried. Daddy tried not to cry
They named me Justice, then had to kiss me good-bye
By the time they arrived, I was already there
They could tell right away I was getting great care
My parents waited with anticipation
Trying hard not to show such high expectations
You tried everything you could, sometimes good, sometimes bad
Emotions ran high; happy, hopeful and sad
You all were so gentle and careful with me
It was the first sign of hope that my parents could see
When others gave up and had no hope to give
You wouldn’t stop. You knew I would live
Your care and compassion gave me a chance
To grow up and giggle, to laugh and to dance!
See I have a big brother. He runs and he plays
And you seem to want that for me for the rest of my days
I’ll always be different from others I know
But thanks to you I WILL get to grow
My entire family is eternally grateful to you
For being the best and knowing just what to do
Regardless of how life turns out for me,
I hope I will have the wisdom to see
That each of you in your own special way
Gave me the chance to live one more day!
